1. Getting Started

Install & Open

Download Rutini from the App Store, install on your device, and open the app.

Onboarding

The first time you open Rutini, you'll see a brief onboarding walkthrough:

  1. Track Your Habits — Build positive habits and break bad ones
  2. Manage Your Tasks — Stay organized with tasks, priorities, and due dates
  3. See Your Progress — Visualize your journey with calendars, streaks, and weekly stats

Tap Next → to advance or Skip (top-right) to go straight to the login screen. Onboarding only appears once for new users.

Create an Account

You need an account to use Rutini. On the login screen:

  1. Tap Sign Up at the bottom
  2. Enter your Email (required — used for password reset)
  3. Enter your Display Name (how you'll appear in the app)
  4. Enter a Username (used for finding friends)
  5. Enter a Password (minimum 6 characters — must match backend)
  6. Tap Create Account

If you already have an account, enter your username and password and tap Log In.

Build 39 fix: If the username is already taken, you'll see a single, clear alert:
"Sign Up Failed: Username already taken"
No more confusing double alerts. If the password is too short, the app catches it client-side before sending the request.

Forgot Password

If you forget your password:

  1. On the login screen, tap Forgot Password?
  2. Enter your email address
  3. Tap Send Reset Link
  4. Check your email for a reset link (valid for 60 minutes)
  5. Tap the link to open the reset screen
  6. Enter your new password (minimum 6 characters)
  7. Tap Reset Password
Note: The reset link opens in your browser. After resetting, open the Rutini app and log in with your new password.

Set Your Profile Photo (Optional)

After logging in, go to the Profile tab and tap your avatar circle to upload a profile photo from your camera roll.

2. Core Concepts

Habits

A habit is any behavior you want to build (or break). Examples: morning run, reading 30 minutes, drinking 8 glasses of water, meditating.

Types of Habits:

TypeDescriptionExample
Yes / NoDid you do it today?Meditate, go to bed early
CountHow many times?Glasses of water: 8/8
DurationHow long?Reading: 30 min
CustomYour own unitPages read, km run, reps

Tracking a Habit:

Build 50: Completing a Yes/No habit triggers a satisfying animation — the checkmark bounces with a scale effect and colorful confetti particles burst out. You'll also feel a subtle haptic vibration.

Streaks

A streak is the number of consecutive days you've completed a habit. The app tracks:

Streaks are shown with a 🔥 badge. Protect them!

Frequency

Not all habits need to be daily. When creating a habit, choose:

The Home screen only shows habits that are due today, based on your frequency.

Quit Habits

You can also track habits you're trying to quit (smoking, social media, junk food). These show a count-up streak ("Day 47 smoke-free") and include relapse tracking.

Quit habit buttons:

Relapse reasons:

When you tap "😔 I Slipped", a bottom sheet appears with:

After recording a relapse:

HabitCard long-press:

Long-pressing a quit habit card shows the same relapse reasons for quick access.

Tasks

Tasks are study or work items with deadlines. Each task has:

Tasks are grouped by project on the Tasks screen.

Routines

A routine is a group of habits you do together — like "Morning Routine" (wake up + meditate + exercise) or "Evening Wind-down" (read + stretch + journal). You can complete individual habits or mark the whole routine as done.

Creating a routine:

  1. Go to Profile → Account Settings → Routines, or tap "See All" on the Routines carousel on the Home screen
  2. Tap + New (top-right)
  3. Enter a name (required) — e.g., "Morning Routine"
  4. Pick a color and icon
  5. Tap Create
  6. Open the routine and tap + Add Habits to add habits from your list

Completing a routine:

Home screen carousel:

Calendar integration:

Mood Tracking

Log how you feel each day with a quick 5-point scale:

😞 Terrible  |  😐 Bad  |  🙂 Okay  |  😊 Good  |  🤩 Great

Where to log mood:

Build 41 (Mood ↔ Journal link): You have two ways to capture mood and they stay in sync. Logging a mood from Home records it to MoodLog; saving a journal entry with a mood mirrors it to MoodLog as well. When you open a day in the calendar, the journal's mood wins if the day has both; otherwise the most recent MoodLog mood is shown. This means you never see a stale mood on the calendar after journaling about the same day.

Journaling

Write daily reflections with mood, gratitude, content, and tags. Each entry includes:

Build 40: Journal is not a separate tab — it's accessed from the Calendar tab. Tap any day → the day-detail modal shows a "Journal" section with an "Add" or "Edit" button that opens the journal editor. This keeps the bottom tab bar focused on the four primary destinations (Home, Habits, Tasks, Calendar, Profile) and surfaces journal alongside your existing habit/task data.

Bottom Tab Bar

The main navigation is a 5-tab bar at the bottom:

TabIconPurpose
Home🏠Dashboard — today's overview
Habits📋Full habit list & management
TasksTask list & management
Calendar📅Calendar view of your habits and tasks
Profile👤Your account, friends, settings

Swipe left or right between tabs, or tap the tab icon.

Secondary Screens

These are accessed from the main tabs:

Build 39 fix: Back navigation is now correct. Tapping ← Back from a sub-screen (Habit Detail, Task Detail, any Settings page, Journal Editor) returns to whichever tab you came from, not always Home. The app uses a Stack-in-Tabs pattern: a Stack navigator wraps the Tabs, and sub-screens are pushed on the Stack.

Habits Screen

Your full habit list.

What you see:

  • All your habits as cards, each showing the icon, name, description, type badge (🔥 Build or 🛡️ Quit), completion checkmark (✓ if done today), streak counter (e.g., 7d or 7d clean for quit habits), and progress indicator (e.g., 3/8 glasses for count-tracked habits)
  • Filter chips at the top: All · Build · Quit · Active
  • A + Add button (top-right) for creating new habits
  • A Discover button (top-left, Build 43+) — browse pre-built habit templates
Build 44 fix: The Habits tab now shows the same completion state and streak count as the Home dashboard. Previously the streak was always shown as 0d and the checkmark never appeared.

Creating a new habit:

  1. Tap + Add (top-right)
  2. Enter a name (required) and optional description
  3. Pick an icon from the emoji grid
  4. Choose a frequency: Daily, Weekly (pick days), Monthly, or Custom (pick days)
  5. Choose a Type: 🔥 Build or 🛡️ Quit
  6. Choose a Tracking mode:
    • Yes / No — Simple completion
    • Count — Number of times (e.g., 8 glasses) — set a target/day and unit
    • Duration — How long in minutes — set a target/day
    • Custom — User-defined unit (e.g., "pages", "km") — set a target/day and unit
  7. (Optional) Add a timer — Stopwatch or Countdown mode
  8. (Optional) Set a reminder — Time, custom message, and recurrence (daily/weekly/monthly/once). You can add more reminders later from the habit detail.
  9. Tap Create Habit

Discovering habits (Build 43):

Tap ✨ Discover in the Habits header (left of "+ Add") to browse 32 pre-built habit templates organized by category. Filter by category using the chip row at the top.

Categories: Fitness 🏃 · Health 🍎 · Productivity 💻 · Mindfulness 🧘 · Learning 📚 · Finance 💰 · Social 👥 · Environment 🌿

Per template card you'll see:

  • Large emoji icon + name
  • Type badge: 🔥 Build (green) or 🛡️ Quit (red)
  • Tracking meta (if non-boolean): e.g. "8 glasses/day", "30 min/day"
  • Description (1-2 lines)
  • + Add to My Habits button

Adding a template:

  1. Tap + Add to My Habits → spinner appears briefly
  2. Success alert: "Added!" with two buttons
  3. Browse more — stay on Discover screen
  4. View — back to Habits list, new habit highlighted
  5. The button changes to ✓ Added (green) so you know which ones you added this session

What gets created: The new habit on your Habits list has the template's name, icon, frequency, type, tracking, target, and unit. You can edit any of these in the habit detail screen.

Add the same template twice: Not a problem — each "+ Add" creates a new habit with a fresh ID, so the second add just creates a duplicate habit (you can delete it from the detail screen). The button changes to "✓ Added" within the same session, but a new session starts fresh.

Deleting a habit: Open the habit detail screen and tap Delete. This also cancels all of the habit's scheduled reminders.

Sort order (Build 39): After applying the type filter (All / Build / Quit / Active), habits are sorted alphabetically by name (A→Z, case-insensitive). The order is stable across sessions.

Habit Detail Screen

Everything about one habit.

What you see:

  • Habit icon, name, description, and tracking type label

  • Next due date (if not due today)

  • Log Completion button (for Yes/No habits) or Log Activity button (for count/duration/custom)
  • Start Timer button (if timer is enabled for this habit)
  • Skip button (visible on every habit card) — log a "skip" with an optional reason. For quit habits, this represents a slip. Tap Undo skip to revert a recent skip.
  • Reminders section — list of active reminders with ON/OFF toggles, edit, and delete options. Tap + Add to create a new reminder.
  • Current Streak card — current streak, longest streak, total completions
  • This Week — Day-by-day completion view (Mon–Sun with ✓ for completed days)

  • For Count/Duration/Custom: Tap "Log Activity" → enter value → add optional notes → tap Save. The input clears after saving. You can log multiple entries per day (e.g., water at 9 AM, 12 PM, 3 PM) — the day's total accumulates.

Activity Log (grouped by day):

  • All log entries are grouped by date with collapsible headers
  • Today / Yesterday labels for recent dates
  • Each group shows the entry count (e.g., "3 entries")
  • Tap the date header to expand/collapse the group
  • All groups start collapsed by default to reduce visual clutter
  • Skip entries show "⏭ Skipped" badge with reason
  • Relapse entries show "😔 Relapse" badge with reason

  • Count — "How many times?" (e.g., 8 glasses of water). Set a target/day.
  • Duration — "How long?" (e.g., 30 min reading). Set a target/day. Pairs with the Habit Timer feature for automatic logging.
  • Custom — User-defined unit (e.g., "pages", "km", "reps"). Set a target/day.

Skip habit (build or quit):

  • From the habit list card, tap the Skip action → enter an optional reason → confirm

  4. Choose a priority: Low, Medium, High, or Urgent
  5. (Optional) Pick a due date using the date picker
  6. Tap Create Task
Build 50: The project field now shows a picker with your existing projects instead of free text. Create projects from Profile → Account Settings → Projects, or tap the 📁 icon in the Tasks header.
Build 51: Task cards now show the project name (not the internal ID) with a colored chip.

Filtering tasks:

  • All — Show everything
  • Today — Only tasks due today
  • Upcoming — Tasks due in the next 7 days

Sort order (Build 39):

Tasks are grouped by due-date category (Overdue, Today, Upcoming, No Due Date), and within each group, sorted by:

  1. Priority (descending): Urgent 🔴 → High 🟠 → Medium 🔵 → Low 🟢

  2. Tap Log Activity (for count/duration/custom habits)

5. Tips

Deleting Your Account (Build 50)

To permanently delete your Rutini account and all associated data:

  1. Go to Profile → scroll down to Danger Zone section
  2. Tap Delete Account
  3. In the confirmation modal, type DELETE in the text field
  4. Tap Delete Account button (enabled only after typing "DELETE")
  5. Your account and all data are permanently deleted. You'll be logged out and redirected to the login screen.

Note: This action is irreversible. All your habits, tasks, journal entries, and settings will be permanently removed.

Photo Permission (Build 50)

When you tap your profile photo to upload a new one, Rutini will ask for permission to access your photo library. If you tap "Don't Allow", a subtle message will appear saying "Photo access is needed to upload a profile photo." — this is informational only and will disappear after 3 seconds. You can still use all other features of the app without photo access.

If you change your mind later, you can enable photo access in iOS Settings → Rutini → Photos.

Notifications & Reminders (Build 39)

Rutini sends local push notifications for habit reminders and task due-dates. They are scheduled on your device (no server push) and fire even when the app is closed.

  • First launch: Rutini asks permission to send notifications. Tap Allow to get reminders. If you tap Don't Allow, you can re-enable later in iOS Settings → Rutini.
  • Habit reminders: Set in the Habit Detail screen → Reminders section. Each reminder has a time, an optional custom message, and a recurrence (daily / weekly / monthly / once).
  • Task reminders: Set the task's due date and Rutini schedules a one-shot notification for the due date.
  • Disabling reminders: Toggle off in Habit Detail, or open Settings → Notifications.
  • Background reminders still fire even if you force-quit the app. The OS manages delivery.
Social & Friends (Build 42)
  • Privacy first. All habits are Private by default. Only habits you explicitly toggle to Public are visible to friends or on your shared profile link.
  • Per-habit control. A habit can be Public while others stay Private. Use the Sharing switch in Habit Detail for each one.
  • Pending requests. When someone adds you, the request appears in your Friends list under the "Pending" filter. Accept or decline at any time.
  • Share links expire after 30 days. Generate a new one whenever you want — old links stop working immediately.
  • What friends see. Currently only aggregated stats (total habits, active streaks, longest streak, total completions) on the public profile. Per-habit details and activity feeds are coming in a future update.
  • No notifications yet for friend events. You'll need to check the Friends screen manually for now (push notification for friend events coming in a future build).
Building Habits
  • Start small. Begin with 3-5 habits maximum. Add more as the basics become automatic.
  • Use the right frequency. If you only exercise on Mon/Wed/Fri, set your habit to that schedule. Don't set it to daily just to force yourself.
  • Set reminders. A nudge at the right time makes a huge difference. Set multiple reminders for habits you forget (e.g., water at 8 AM, 12 PM, 4 PM).
  • Use the timer. For habits like meditation or exercise, the built-in timer removes friction — just tap and go.
  • Try a template. The "Discover" screen has 32 curated habit templates across 8 categories. Save time by starting with what works for others — then customize to fit your life.
Managing Tasks
  • Assign projects. Group tasks by subject (Math, Science, Work) so your list stays organized.
  • Use priority wisely. Reserve 🔴 Urgent for things due today or tomorrow. If everything is urgent, nothing is.
  • Set due dates. Tasks without due dates drift. Even a rough deadline keeps things moving.
  • Filter by "Today". Before bed, check the "Today" filter to see what you missed.
Streaks
  • Don't break the chain. Even a 2-minute version of your habit is better than nothing — it keeps the streak alive.
  • Your longest streak is your benchmark. Use it as motivation, not pressure.
Mood & Journaling
  • Log mood before habits. Your mood at the start of the day is a better baseline than how you feel after completing tasks.
  • Use gratitude prompts. Even one sentence of gratitude per day rewires your brain over time.
  • Tag your entries. Tags like #workout, #exam, #rest make it easy to search back later.
  • Build a journaling streak. The streak counter keeps you accountable.
  • Quick-mood or journal — pick whichever fits. (Build 41) Logging mood from the Home screen is 1-tap; journaling is for richer days. Both end up on the calendar, so you can mix freely.
  • Backfill from journal. (Build 41) When you write a journal entry for a past date, the mood you pick also goes to that day's mood log. Use this to retroactively log mood for days you missed.
Theme
  • Dark themes are easier on your eyes for late-night reviewing.
  • Light theme is great for daytime use in bright environments.
  • System (Auto) — follows your device's dark/light setting automatically (Build 52).
  • Switch anytime — it takes one tap.
Offline Mode (Build 52)

Rutini works offline. When you lose connectivity:

  • Completing habits, logging tasks, and other actions are queued locally
  • When you're back online, queued actions sync automatically
  • You'll see your changes immediately (optimistic UI) even while offline
Analytics & Insights (Build 52)

View your progress with visual charts:

  • Profile → "Analytics & Insights" opens the analytics dashboard
  • Summary cards — total habits, tasks, completions, best streak
  • Completion rates — per-habit completion percentage bar chart
  • Streak distribution — how many habits fall into each streak bucket
  • Heatmap — calendar grid showing activity intensity
  • Weekly comparison — this week vs last week side-by-side
Pomodoro Timer (Build 52)

For habits that need focused time (reading, studying, meditation):

  1. Create or edit a habit → enable Timer → choose Stopwatch or Countdown
  2. On the habit detail screen, tap ⏱ Start Timer
  3. In the timer modal, toggle from Basic to Pomodoro
  4. Pomodoro runs: 25 min work5 min break → repeat → 15 min long break after 4 sessions
  5. Session dots show your progress through the cycle
  6. A notification sound plays when each phase ends
Data Export (Build 52)

Download all your data:

  1. Go to Profile → Settings → Data & Privacy
  2. Tap Export my data
  3. A JSON file is created and shared via your device's share sheet
  4. Save it wherever you like — the file contains all your habits, tasks, logs, journals, and mood entries
